Bruce Martinez

Bruce Martinez didn’t exactly take it easy during his time at Santa Clara. The Communication major coordinated an immersion trip to El Salvador for the Arrupe Center, served as a resident assistant, wrote for the student newspaper, and announced basketball games for the campus radio station.

The hectic schedule helped him prep for his current job as a program assistant for Walden House, a drug and alcohol treatment center in San Francisco. Bruce works primarily with troubled male adolescents and assists the staff therapists and clinicians.

"At the end of the day the staff is always tired and always has more work to do," he explains. "It is a constant challenge to keep up with the demands of 32 adolescent boys."

The Las Vegas native credits the diversity he experienced at Santa Clara with helping him adjust to the ever-changing atmosphere at the treatment facility, which opened its doors more than 35 years ago and now helps more than 3,400 people every day.

"Santa Clara immersed me in a diverse climate that prepared me for all the different people I have met at Walden House," he says. "The university did an excellent job of encouraging critical thought and preparing me for new challenges."
