The Society of Professional Journalists/NorCal, Independent Arts & Media, and other regional organizations organized the conference to discuss the news media's role in democracy, along with new ideas and approaches to fulfilling this role when the old business models aren't working. The conference drew professional journalists from around the state to learn about innovations in journalism funding, news delivery, and involvement by the public.
