Part Time Associate Dean
Josef Hellebrandt is an associate professor and former Chair (2003-09) in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University, where he teaches courses in Spanish and German languages and cultures. After finishing a M.A. in Political Science in his native Germany, he came to the United States in 1984 studying Latin American Literature at the University of North Carolina (M.A., 1987) and Foreign Language Education at Purdue University (Ph.D., 1990).
His research interests focus on service-learning and community engagement in Spanish. He is co-editor of Learning the Language of Global Citizenship: Service-Learning in Applied Linguistics (Anker, 2007), of Juntos: Community Partnerships in Spanish and Portuguese (Thomson & Heinle, 2003) and of Construyendo Puentes (Building Bridges): Concepts and Models of Service-Learning in Spanish (AAHE, 1999). He also serves on the board of the non-profit South Bay German School in San Jose.
