Important Dates & Symposium Agenda

Please return for updates as deadlines approach!

19 December 2008
Deadline: Symposium Proposals (Faculty submission)
Please submit any suggestions for special sessions by December 19th.  These could be several related talks from one or more lab groups or, perhaps, a course.  For example, Dr. Michelle Bezanson (Anthropology) and I will present a symposium of research conducted by students attending our integrated plant and primate behavioral ecology course in Costa Rica (ANTH 197/ENVS 134, Summer Session II 2008).  Symposia will be held on Saturday the 9th of May 2009.  Please email Sean (SWatts@scu.edu) a title, a brief description (100 words max.), moderators name, title and contact information, and a list of anticipated talks.

1 January 2009
Deadline: Students should submit draft abstracts to their mentors

5 January 2009
Deadline: Faculty Abstracts
Full name, department, title and an abstract of approx. 300 words should be submitted to Sean via email (SWatts@scu.edu).  Please indicate if the talk will be an advertisement for research or a general presentation.

In addition, if you anticipate sponsoring a student presenter please submit: title and contact information, and the name, major(s), class standing and email of student presenters. If you can provide a tentative title and/or short description of the talk as well, that would be great (but not absolutely necessary).

1 February 2009
Deadline: Final Title & Abstract (Student submission)
Abstract of approx. 300 words to be submitted to Sean via email (SWatts@scu.edu). Abstracts should include: background, a statement of the question(s), brief summary of experimental design, RESULTS, and conclusions. Especially in this forum, the content can (and probably will) shift by May, but we would like to introduce students to established practice.  Please avoid excessive jargon to broaden your abstract's appeal to the general scientific community.

NOTE: We will have a poster session this year if students would rather present in this format, however, we strongly encourage oral presentations (please note preference during abstract submission).

Early Spring Quarter 2009
We will send all faculty a schedule of sessions and a flyer. Please announce the symposium and its goals in class and encourage (or incentivize) students to attend. If faculty teach (especially intro classes) during the symposium (Friday, 8 May), please consider having your class attend.

8-9 May 2009
Undergraduate Science and Engineering Symposium
The symposium will likely run from 12-7pm on each day… with breaks, trust us. The symposium will begin with a presentation on research: Why do research? How do you get involved in research? This will be followed by sessions divided according to discipline (or similar disciplines depending on the number of participants.

The basic schedule for each of these sessions will be as follows:
1) 10 minute talks (~5 talks per session)
2) Informal panel discussion to answer questions from those talks; followed by a general discussion of careers, research and the culture of science in that discipline.
3) We will have short breaks between sessions to allow students to interact with one another and finish the symposium with a reception & awards ceremony on Saturday evening.
