Ulistac and your New Year's Resolution

January 1, 2007

What is your New Year's Resolution?

- Spend time more time with my children/family/friends
- Live healthier (eat better, exercise more, spend more time outdoors)
- Contribute to my community
- Support local environmental restoration efforts
- Learn something new

If your resolution was listed above, or if it's similar, join us at Ulistac Natural Area! Spend quality time outdoors with your children/family/loved ones as you work side-by-side with fellow community members. Learn about planting and caring for native California plants. Spend a few hours outside, getting exercise and contributing to a local environmental restoration project. Join us at one of our regular workdays!

Watering and mulching!

Saturday, December 2, 2006

Twenty-four volunteers made our most recent workday a huge success! The group focused on watering the newly planted shrubs in the Bird and Butterfly Garden. They also mulched and watered dozens of oak seedlings in the Oak savannah and Oak woodland. We also prepared an area for planting in an effort to extend the Bird and Butterfly Garden closer to Lick Mill Boulevard.

One dozen blue oaks planted

Sunday, November 17, 2006

Over a dozen volunteers worked together to plant twelve blue oak acorns along the ridge North of the Hetch Hetchy corridor. They dug holes, planted each acorn in a compost/soil mixture, and placed protective tubing and stakes at each planting site.

Oak woodlands were once a dominating plant community throughout the Santa Clara Valley. Oak trees, once found throughout much of the valley floor, are now mostly scattered in neighborhood parks or urban yards. Planting, protecting, and maintaining acorns and saplings are necessary steps in establishing oak woodlands within Ulistac Natural Area.

Students on a field trip to Ulistac Natural Area

Field Trips

The Ulistac Outreach Center recently unveiled a new, expanded field trip curriculum for Kindergarten through 8th grade classes. The California Content Standards-based activities focus on ecology and conservation, and encourage students to explore and enjoy the outdoors - especially at Ulistac Natural Area!

Teachers from nearby Don Callejon School, Kathryn-Hughes Elementary School, (and more!) are invited to schedule free, 60-minute guided field trips for their classes. Visit the Field Trip site for more information.
