21st Annual Alumni Dinner Saturday, March 7 Adobe Lodge
Your choice of entrees are Chicken Adobe Lodge and Eggplant Parmesan. If you have not yet returned your response card, please do so today. If you did not receive an invitation, please contact Jenny Moddy ('07) at the Alumni Office (408 / 554-6800) to let her know you will be attending and your entree choice. Over the past few years we have used this dinner as a way to acquaint you with new members of the department so you can get to know them a bit and their research interests. Again this year our speaker will be the newest member of the department, Fr. Michael Engh, S.J., who joined the University in January as professor of history . . . . . and the 28th president of the University. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to introduce Fr. Engh to you in one of his first alumni gatherings. Father Engh is a native Southern Californian who received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University and his doctorate in history from the University of Wisconsin. After graduating from Loyola, he entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest in 1981. His academic and administrative career has been spent at Loyola Marymount University, most recently serving as dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. His research emphasis has been on religion in the American West, especially in the Los Angeles area, and he has written widely on aspects of this subject. The topic for his after-dinner remarks will be his vision for Santa Clara in the light of his historical scholarship. In addition, two long-time members of the department, Steven Gelber and Joby Margadant, will retire at the end of Winter Quarter in March. Steven came to Santa Clara in 1969 and Joby in 1983. Over the years both of them have left their imprint on the minds and hearts of their students and colleagues, and this will be a timely opportunity for you to wish them both well. As always, all members of the department look forward to visiting with you and catching up on your latest professional and personal accomplishments.
