Santa Clara University

Center For Nanostructures

A collaborative effort between the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, the Center will conduct, promote, and nurture nanoscale science and technology interdisciplinary research and education activities at the University. It also hopes to position the University as a national center of innovation in nanoscience education and nanostructures research.

Nanotechnology deals with the creation of functional materials, devices, and systems at a length scale of 1 to 100 nanometers in at least one principal direction. The emphasis is on exploiting the novel properties (physical, chemical, biological, electrical, magnetic, mechanical, and optical), which arise due to the nanoscale nature of the material.

Nanotechnology is currently receiving much attention worldwide in terms of research funding, competitive research and development, and number of start-up companies. It is expected that nanotechnology will have a significant impact on all aspects of our society in a decade or less.
