. . . fostering a culture in which the arts and social justice become an integral, vital dimension of campus life. The Justice and the Arts Initiative (JAI) serves as an incubator for the arts and social justice on campus and in the community. The purpose of the JAI is to create an intellectual frame of reference for examining and fostering artistic processes that are critically bound to issues of social justice. The programs of the JAI instigate and enliven a climate of inquiry, support practical experimentation and production, and create models for interdisciplinary projects between students, staff, faculty and the community. A College of Arts and Sciences Initiative, the JAI supports creative work in the fields of Theatre, Dance and Music through its partnership with the Center of Performing Arts, and also the Visual, Literary and Media arts through their related departments. The initiative is also working to reach out beyond the College to collaborate with Law, Business, Engineering and Education. Through collaborative curricular and co- curricular programming, the JAI is working toward the university’s goals of developing competence, enlivening conscience and awakening compassion. Students interested in studying social justice and the arts can enroll in the Social Justice and the Arts Seminar that will be offered in the spring quarter of 2010. JAI also mentors two student initiated programs, Arts Reach and Teatro Catalina. Arts Reach trains SCU students to facilitate arts enrichment classes at Sacred Heart Community Services in San Jose. Teatro Catalina is a student group that has built the first permanent stage in the small village of Villa Catalina, Nicaragua. The stage will serve as home for an after school summer theatre program for youth. The group seeks to build a sustainable arts initiative for the youth there. |
