ARABIC/ISLAMIC STUDIES
ARAB 2 Elementary Arabic II
The second in a series of three courses, Elementary Arabic 2 continues the development of communicative language skills and cultural understanding acquired in Elem. Arabic I. Prerequisite: Arabic 1 or equivalent.
ARAB 22 Intermediate Arabic II
Continuation of Intermediate Arabic with focus on building additional vocabulary, using Arabic-English dictionary, reading and discussion of Arabic texts dealing with the literature, arts, geography, history, and culture of the Arabic-speaking world. The teaching/learning process in this level is proficiency-oriented where emphasis is placed on the functional usage of Arabic and communication in context in the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Prerequisite: Arabic 21 or equivalent..
CHINESE STUDIES
CHIN 2 Elementary Chinese II
Offered only once a year in the Winter quarter. The second in a series of three courses, Chinese 2 continues basic training in the skills of reading and writing Chinese and in speaking Mandarin Chinese. Further development of cultural understanding. Prerequisite: Chinese 1 or equivalent.
CHIN 22 Intermediate Chinese II
Through a review of the fundamentals of spoken and written Chinese, students will develop further all the skills of Chinese: listening, speaking, reading and writing. New grammatical structures and Chinese written characters continue to be introduced. Special attention will be given to developing an appreciation of Chinese history and culture. Prerequisite: Chinese 21 or equivalent.
CHIN 101 Advanced Chinese II
The second in a series of three courses, Chinese 101 is aimed at expanding the student's vocabulary in written and spoken Chinese, and developing his or her ability to comprehend and use complex grammatical structures with ease. Course conducted in Chinese. Prerequisite: CHIN 100 or equivalent

FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE STUDIES
FREN 2 Elementary French II
The second in a series of three courses, French 2 continues the development of communicative language skills and cultural understanding acquired in French I. This proficiency-based course follow the text Deux Mondes (chapter 4-7) and requires active participation in class. Offered only in winter. Prerequisite: FREN 1, or two years of high school French, or equivalent.
FREN 22 Intermediate French II
This course is offered only once a year, in the Winter. The primary aims of this course are to review important areas of French grammar not covered in French 21, and to increase the speed and enjoyment of reading original French prose. The course will be conducted entirely in French to capitalize further on the practical oral applications of the language. Audio CD’ s, a videotape and the Internet will be integrated into this course. Prerequisite: FREN 21, or four years of high school French, or equivalent.
FREN 113 Francophone Cultures and Civilization: Black African Women Writers
This course is an introduction to literature written by Black African women writers. Through literature (interviews, personal testimonies, novels, autobiography) and film (documentaries, movies), students will witness the changing face of Black Africa, from colonial times to the present, as seen through the eyes of women. Prerequisite: FREN 101 or equivalent.
FREN 180 Biography of a City: Paris
Through a selection of literary works, visual arts including film, we will study intellectual, literary, and artistic movements that made Paris one of the most influential cities in the world. Prerequisite: FREN 101 or equivalent.

GERMAN STUDIES
GERM 2 Elementary German II
The goal of this course is to further develop communicative language skills and cultural understanding. This proficiency-based course follows Kontake (chapters 4-7) and calls for active performance in class. Prerequisite: GERM 1, or two years of high school German, or equivalent.
GERM 22 Intermediate German II
Continuation of German 21. The course will help students expand on their communicative language skills, review grammar and further develop reading and writing skills. We will cover the second half of Kaleidoskop, the text used in German 21. Prerequisite: GERM 21, or 4 years of high school German, or equivalent.
GERM 180 German Cinema (Cross-listed with ENGL 169)
An overview of German film making from the beginnings to the present. Analysis and discussion of influential films with emphasis on the evolution of cinematic style and techniques. Exploration of the socio-historical and cultural context in which the films were made. Taught in English. No prerquisites. (Cross-listed listed as ENGL 169) German component available. Prerequisite for the German component is: German 101 or equivalent.

ITALIAN STUDIES
ITAL 2 Elementary Italian II
A continuation of Italian 1, Elementary Italian II is offered only during the Winter quarter. This course continues presenting the basic elements of the Italian language: sounds, essential vocabulary and grammatical structures. Daily exercises will aid the student to attain a firm grasp of the spoken and written language. Elements of Italian culture, geography and customs are presented weekly to arouse student interest and to provide topics for discussions. Prerequisite: ITAL 1, or two years of high school Italian, or equivalent.
ITAL 22 Intermediate Italian II
This course continues the review of the fundamentals of spoken and written Italian begun in Intermediate Italian I. Progressive readings reflecting Italian culture and values. Progressive exercises in conversation and composition. Prerequisite: ITAL 21, or four years of high school Italian, or equivalent.
ITAL 182 20th Century Italian Women Writers
Critical analysis of major works by leading women writers and the changing role of women in 20th Century Italian society: Grazia Deledda, Sibilla Aleramo, Elsa Morante, Natalia Ginzburg, Maria Bellonci, Laudomia Bonanni, Lalla Romano, Milena Milani, Francesca Sanvitale, Romana Petri, Isabella Bossa Fedrigotti, and Gina Lagorio. Prerequisite: ITAL 101 or equivalent.

JAPANESE STUDIES
JAPN 2 Elementary Japanese II
This class provides an introduction to basic communication skills in Japanese. An oral teaching approach is taken to develop proficiency in comprehending and using elementary vocabulary and grammatical structures. Students will begin reading texts in Japanese and learning Chinese characters (kanji). Pertinent aspects of Japanese culture are also discussed. Prerequisite: JAPN 1 or equivalent.
JAPN 22 Intermediate Japanese II
New grammatical structures and Chinese written characters continue to be introduced. Progressive exercises are utilized to develop facility in conversation, reading and composition; these skills are equally emphasized. Awareness of how language, cultural values and social practices are interrelated is promoted. Prerequisite: JAPN 21 or equivalent.
JAPN 101 Advanced Japanese II
This course is aimed at expanding the student’s vocabulary in spoken and written Japanese, and developing his or her ability to use complex grammatical structures with ease. Class time will be spent reading about and discussing topics of contemporary interest taken from a variety of sources. Prerequisite: JAPN 100 or equivalent.

SPANISH STUDIES
SPAN 2 Elementary Spanish II
The second in a series of three courses, Spanish 2 continues the development of communicative language skills and cultural understanding. This proficiency-based course follows the text Dos Mundos and requires active performance in class. Prerequisite: SPAN 1 or two years of high school Spanish.
SPAN 22 Intermediate Spanish II
Spanish 22 continues the intermediate sequence, and is a prerequisite to Spanish 23. Students will develop further all the skills of Spanish, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Special attention is given to developing an appreciation of Hispanic values and civilization along with making continued progress in the language. All sections of SPAN 22 contain an integrated, reflective community-based learning component. All students enrolled in SPAN 22 will be automatically enrolled in SPAN 97 (Community-Based Learning Practicum) at the end of the first week of class. Course conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 21, or four years of high school Spanish, or equivalent.
SPAN 97 Community Based Learning Practicum
This 1-unit course is for students enrolled in SPAN 21, 22, or 23 which have an integrated, reflective community-based learning component. This practicum includes eight weeks of participatory work in a community agency. Requirements: two hours per week at agency site over course of placement.
SPAN 100 Advanced Spanish I
Required of all Spanish majors and minors. Advanced development of all Spanish skills with particular attention to composition and to a systematic introduction to literary analysis of specific genres. Course conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 23 or equivalent.
SPAN 101 Advanced Spanish II
Required of all Spanish majors and minors. This course is a prerequisite for all subsequent upper division courses in Spanish at Santa Clara. Systematic development of all Spanish skills. This course completes the introduction to formal literary analysis begun in Spanish 100. Particular attention is paid to Spanish composition at an advanced level. Course conducted in Spanish. Prerequisite: Spanish 100 or equivalent.
SPAN 110 Advanced Spanish Conversation
This course is designed to develop strong conversational skills, and is aimed at improving the student's ability for self‑expression in Spanish. Classroom activities emphasize several contemporary themes and topics: politics, urban life, cultural conflicts, sports, entertainment, social justice, current events, education, communication, Hispanics in the U.S., and ecology. The expansion of the student's active vocabulary will be stressed in the course. New vocabulary will be systematically introduced through classroom readings and discussions. Requirements: participation in the Eastside Project; reading of Spanish newspapers and magazines; listening to Spanish radio; viewing of Spanish TV educational programs; 15‑minute oral midterm and a 30‑minute individual oral final. Readings in daily Spanish newspapers and magazines. Prerequisite: Spanish 101 or equivalent. No auditors. Limited to 12 students.
SPAN 121 Major Works of Spanish Literature II
Readings in Spanish Literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or equivalent.
SPAN 137 Latin American Culture and Civilization
Exploration of the basic factors that have molded and continue to shape the diverse lives and institutions of contemporary Spanish-speaking peoples of the Americas. Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or equivalent.
