Santa Clara University Music Department Private Instruction Enrollment Protocols
  1. All students who are REQUIRED to take lessons for their Major or Minor receive first priority for lessons:
    1. Music Majors are REQUIRED to take 60 minute lessons each quarter they are declared Majors; and they are ALLOWED to take an additional 30 minutes of instruction in an area of their choice (OR two 45 minute lessons; or three 30 minute lessons as approved by the Chair)
    2. Music Minors are REQUIRED to take 45 minute lessons for two years.  If they are not keyboard proficient, they may also take 30 minutes of private keyboard instruction as approved by the Chair.  If there is not enrollment space, a group piano lesson may be recommended.
    3. Musical Theater Minors are required to take 6 quarters of 45 minute vocal instruction over the course of their minor.  Theater majors MAY take vocal instruction as provided by the Theater Department.  These lessons are administrated by the Administrative Assistant of the Music Department, in consultation with the Department of Theater and Dance, and they are capped separately from the Department of Music’s allotment for Private Instruction from the College.

N.B.  Only students with completed paperwork filed with the department and registrar will be considered majors or minors.  This paperwork must be completed PRIOR to registration for lessons.

  1. Students who are playing in an approved departmental ensemble receive next priority for lessons:
    1. Students who receive ensemble scholarships will have priority before other regularly enrolled students.
    2. Other students, as identified by the ensemble directors may receive priority for lessons, if approved by the Chair.
  2. Elective students receive last priority; the Music Department allocates these resources based upon enrollments in the current program and on student and departmental need.

All students must be enrolled in lessons by the end of the first week of the quarter.

All students who are enrolled in private instruction must complete 9 weeks of instruction and take a jury in their area of study.  Students enrolled in their first quarter of private instruction and those enrolled in a Junior or Senior Recital do not have to take a jury during those quarters.  All juries are organized and scheduled by the instructors in consultation with the Music Department, and take place during finals week.

Jury Examination

During Finals week of each quarter, all students enrolled in applied instruction (except those in their first enrolled quarter) are required to perform for a faculty committee worth a third of their grade for that quarter’s work.  Students are asked to fill out a jury examination form on which they list material studied throughout the quarter; they will be asked to play one or more of these works at their Jury Examination, which lasts between 5 and 10 minutes. One exemption to this requirement is allowed each academic year if a student has participated in a departmentally sponsored performance such as Music at Noon or a solo recital.
