Lower Division Courses

1. Music Theory I 

An introductory course in the rudiments of music: notation, scales, intervals, chords, rhythm and meter.  (4 units)

 

1A. Aural Skills I 

Required lab taught in conjunction with MUSC I two hours/week to develop sight singing and aural skills. (2 units)

 

2. Music Theory II 

Continuation of MUSC 1.  Introduction to part writing: figured bass and harmonization; score analysis.  Prerequisite: MUSC 1 or permission of instructor. (4 units)

 

2A. Aural Skills II 

Required lab taught in conjunction with MUSC 2 two hours/week to develop sight singing and aural skills.  Prerequisite: MUSC 1 or permission of instructor.  (2 units)

           

3. Music Theory III 

Continuation of MUSC 2. Further instruction in part writing up to secondary dominants.  Score analysis.  Prerequisite: MUSC 2 or permission of instructor.  (4 units)

 

3A. Aural Skills III  

Required lab taught in conjunction with MUSC 3 two hours/week to develop sight singing and aural skills.  Prerequisite: MUSC 2 or permission of instructor.  (2 units)

 

4.  Music Theory IV/Advanced 4-Part Writing 

Continuation of MUSC 3 for Music Majors.  Study of modulation, chromaticism and late 19th-century practices.  Prerequisite: MUSC 3 or permissions of instructor.  (4 units)

 

4A.  Aural Skills IV 

Required lab taught in conjunction with MUSC 4 two hours/week to develop sight singing and aural skills.  Prerequisite:  MUSC 3 or permission of instructor.  (2 units) 

 

5A. Aural Skills V 

Continuing lab, two hours/ week, to develop sight singing and aural skills, to be taken sequentially after MUSC 4/4A.  Please note that this lab no longer has a corresponding four-unit course.  Prerequisite for 5A:  MUSC 4A.  (2 units)

 

6A. Aural Skills VI      

Continuing lab, two hours/week, to develop sight singing and aural skills, to be taken sequentially after MUSC 4/4A.  Please note that this lab no longer has a corresponding four-unit course.  Prerequisite for 6A: MUSC 5A.  (2 units)        

 

8. Introduction to Music 

Exploration of genres, styles, forms, and musical techniques.  Designed for non-majors.  (4 units)

 

11. Performance and Culture I 

Interdisciplinary study of Western Culture through the arts of music, theatre, and dance.  Ancient cultures with an emphasis on Greece and Rome and the medieval era are the focus in this first of a series of three courses.  Open to majors and non-majors.  (4 units)

 

12. Performance and Culture II

Continuation of MUSC 11.  The renaissance in Italy and England an the Enlightenment.  Open to majors and non-majors.  (4 units)

 

13.  Performance and Culture III

Continuation of PERF 12.  19th and 20th century Romanticism, modern and contemporary eras.  Open to majors and non-majors.  (4 units)

 

16.  Music at Noon

This class is organized around the Music at Noon series of concerts and performances.  The weekly series brings the opportunity to experience live performances of music from all parts of the world by artists of local, national, and international renown.  Open to all students.  (1 unit)

 

17. Music of the Caribbean

Introduction to the music of the Caribbean Islands (Rumba, Salsa, Reggae, Zouk, etc.) through historical, stylistic, and cultural survey.  Spanish, French, and English Caribbean are central with special emphasis on Cuba.  Students have the opportunity to learn basic percussion (maracas, clave, guiro, bongo).  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

20.  Music in American Culture I

A survey of music generated by America’s diverse populations, including Latino, African American, Native American, Cajun, Appalachian, and Asian.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

21.  Music in American Culture II

A historical survey of Rock and Roll, Jazz, and Bluegrass, focusing on the varieties of music generated by America’s patchwork culture.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

World Music LAB

Depending on student interest and experience, music from any of the world’s regions may be emphasized.  Objective is participation in music-making, as it occurs, in various world populations.  By permission of instructor.  (2 units)

 

26. La Musica y Cultura Cubana

Held in Santiago de Cuba at the Conservatorio Esteban Salas, also including research and study in Guantanamo, Baracoa, and Havana, this course is presented in collaboration with SCU International Programs and offers an intensive and complete submersion in Cuban music, dance, and culture.  (4 units)

 

30. Beginning Piano Class

Introductory instruction in piano in a classroom setting. Class limited to 16 students.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

31. Intermediate Piano Class

Intermediate classroom piano instruction.  Class limited to 16 students.  Prerequisite: MUSC 30 or permission of instructor.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

32. Group Proficiency Class

Preparation for the Keyboard Proficiency Examination.  Priority enrollment for Music Majors.  (4 units)

 

33. Keyboard Proficiency Class 

For music majors only.  Preparation for the Keyboard Proficiency Examination.  (1 unit)

 

34. Beginning Voice Class

Application of basic vocal techniques to develop singing facility.   Practical experience in performing.  May be repeated for credit.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

35. Intermediate Voice Class  

Continuation of MUSC 34, focusing on more advanced approaches to vocal technique and repertoire.  May be repeated for credit.  Prerequisite: MUSC 34 or permission of instructor.  (4 units)

 

36. Beginning Guitar Class

Examination of essential elements required to play guitar in the     classical style, including fundamental principles of technique, sight-reading, pedagogic repertoire, history, and literature.  May be repeated for credit.  Open to non-majors.  (4 units)

 

38. Technology Proficiency Class  

For music majors only.  Preparation for Technology Proficiency Examination.  (1 unit)
