Music in American Cultures
Music of the Caribbean Son Santa Clara Robert BozinaSenior LecturerRobert Bozina, MA, studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Conservatorio Esteban Salas in Santiago de Cuba,and San Francisco State University. Founder of the guitar program at SCU, his contributions to world music and curriculum are equally important and include courses in Music of The Spanish, English and French Caribbean as well as music in American cultures. He created and directs“Music at Noon”, an ongoing university performance series that promotes artistic pluralism, cultural diversity, and global understanding through music. Music at Noon is changing the cultural climate of the university. The Guitar Foundation of America states his original works(recorded and published for Terra Nova) constitute"a significant contribution to the literature for voice and classical guitar." His work as a studio musician for Vanguard records in New York and Los Angeles placed him on Wire Magazine’s list of “ the top 100 albums to scorch the earth in the 20th Century.” Author of a book on Fundamentals of Music Theory for the guitarist, he worked as a manuscript reader for Oxford University Press and contributed to world music publications. A specialist in Cuban music and culture, Robert Bozina is an Affiliate Professor with Havana’s Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte and worked with that institution to establish Santa Clara’s celebrated study abroad program in Cuba.He plays the Cuban Tres and leads Son Santa Clara; a student/professional
group dedicated to performing music of Cuba's eastern provinces. Son Santa Clara
