David Pier

Dave Pier is an assistant professor specializing in ethnomusicology. He teaches the Cultures and Ideas sequence in music, Music of Africa, and small jazz ensembles. Currently, he is developing a Ugandan xylophone ensemble at SCU.  He will be teaching additional upper-level courses in jazz and popular music, music analysis, and ethnomusicology.

Dave earned a Ph. D. at the City University of New York. He received a Fulbright fellowship in 2006 to fund his research in Uganda. He has published an article on hip hop, and is writing articles on a commercialized traditional music competition in Uganda and on the Ugandan popular music genre kadongo kamu. As a jazz pianist and composer, he has recorded with Roswell Rudd, Jane Monheit, and Clark Terry.
