Peter Gelfand

String Faculty - Cello

Peter Gelfand has been Principal Cellist with the San Jose Symphony since the 1985 season. During his first three seasons, he divided his time equally between the San Jose Symphony and the renowned St. Louis Symphony, an orchestra with which he toured and recorded extensively. Since the 1988 season, he has also served as the principal cellist with the Monterey County Symphony.

Mr. Gelfand has participated in numerous music festivals including the Banff Festival of the Arts, the Colorado Music Festival, and the Spoleto Festival of the Two Worlds where he performed as principal cellist both in Charleston, South Carolina and in Spolero, Italy.

Mr. Gelfand received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Indiana University School of Music, where he studied with legendary cellist Janos Starker. While at Indiana University, he also studied chamber music with Josef Gingold, Menahem Pressler, Franco Gulli, Gyorgy Sebok, and Eva Janzer.

Active throughout the Bay Area as a chamber musician, Mr. Gelfand is a founding member of two locally based chamber music groups: the San Jose String Quartet (founded in 1989), and the San Jose Chamber Players. Mr. Gelfand is on the faculty of the Santa Clara University Department of Music.
