Gary Macy, Ph.D.

John Nobili, S.J. Professor, Department Chair, Director, Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries

Dr. Macy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he developed a love for good food, good beer, good wine and good conversation. An English literature major at Marquette University in Milwaukee who couldn't decide if he wanted to study medieval literature, philosophy, or history realized that he could do all three if he majored in theology. After graduating with an undergraduate and a master's degrees from Marquette, he traveled to Cambridge University where he earned a doctoral degree in historical theology (and developed a taste for very dry sherry). For the next twenty-nine years, Dr. Macy taught courses on the medieval church and on Christian ritual at the University of San Diego. Here he met, fell in love with, and married his wife, Saralynn Ferrara.

During his years in San Diego, Dr. Macy published several books and over twenty articles on the theology and history of the Eucharist and on women's ordination. In 1991-2, Dr. Macy was Heroditus Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and during the 2005-2006 academic year was Senior Luce Fellowship at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina (where he developed a taste for barbeque).

In 2007, Dr. Macy was appointed John Nobili, S.J. Professor of Theology at Santa Clara University. He continues his interest in Christian ritual and his love for good food, good beer, good wine and good conversation.
