Mark Francis, C.S.V.

Dr. Francis is a native of Chicago and holds an M.Div. and an MA in Theology from the Catholic Theological Union. Ordained in 1982 and having served for three years in Bogotá Colombia, Mark studied in Rome and obtained a Doctorate in Sacred liturgy (S.L.D.) from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant'Anselmo in 1988. For twelve years he taught Liturgy at CTU and was a regular lecturer at the Liturgy Institute of Chicago (a program of liturgical formation for lay pastoral ministers run by the Archdiocese) and its Spanish language counterpart. Mark also served on the revision/translation subcommittee of ICEL (the International Commission on English in the Liturgy). He has written numerous articles on liturgical topics and is especially interested in the relationship between liturgy and culture. Among his many articles and several books, he is the author of Shape A Circle Ever Wider: Inculturating the Liturgy in the United States. In July of 2000 Mark was elected Superior General of his religious community, the Viatorians, and currently resides in Rome. Although principally responsible for his religious Community in sixteen countries around the world, he is a regular lecturer at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselm and was elected by the Union of Superiors' General to be a participant at the recent Bishops' Synod on the Eucharist, held at the Vatican in October of 2005.
