Employment Development Internship Employment Readiness Internship Program Participant Support Services Internship Community Development and Advocacy Internship Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County seeks dedicated volunteers to serve as interns in our office year-round. Over a five different positions are available assisting with our refugee resettlement, self-sufficiency, and community engagement programs. Summer internships require a commitment of 20-40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks. Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County Refugee Resettlement program addresses the needs and rights of persons in forced or voluntary migration worldwide by advancing fair and humane public policy, facilitating and providing direct professional services, and promoting the full participation of migrants in community life. Catholic Charities provides refugees and immigrants across the United States with the support, services and opportunities they need to rebuild their lives and enrich their communities. From the first bewildering days after arrival, to the excitement of starting a new job, to the elation of purchasing a home or opening a business, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County works alongside our program participants to make sure that they keep taking the next step towards their successful integration and active participation in the United States. Desired Qualifications ● Previous internship experience in nonprofit organizations. ● Experience working or volunteering with resettled refugees or similar populations. ● Care proficient in one or more languages in addition to English are highly desired. Preference will be given to speakers of: Arabic, Burmese (and other languages from Burma), Amharic, Lingala, Swahili, Farsi/Dari, Pashto, Karen, Napali, French, and Russian. ● Experience with basic graphic design, Google Docs, wiki websites, and
CCSCC Refugee Resettlement - 2012 Internship Listings1 databases. ●Solid understanding of international relations, refugee law, torture-related issues, or The Refugee Resettlement program of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County opened in 1982 and now resettles hundreds of refugee families every year in Silicon Valley within Santa Clara County. The largest populations served by the Refugee Resettlement program are from Burma, Iraq, and Bhutan, with additional populations from the Congo, Sudan, Eritrea, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County focuses on meeting the immediate basic needs of new arrivals, assisting refugees in obtaining early employment and achieving self-sufficiency, and nurturing community integration for new Americans. Benefits and Resources Available to CCSCC Refugee Resettlement Interns All interns have access to range of benefits during their time at CCSCC Refugee Resettlement Program, including on-the-job learning opportunities and professional development resources. Below are the benefits of our internships: 1.) Develop a rich understanding of refugees and refugee resettlement process 2.) Experience a unique immersion in the daily operations of a multicultural non-profit organization with 30 years of experience serving refugees. 3.) Participate in on-site trainings related to both the field of refugee resettlement and skills relevant to any nonprofit setting. 4.) Catholic Charities staff are available to provide advice on job search in the refugee resettlement field, and will review and provide feedback on interns’ resumes and cover letters. Many interns: 5.) Take advantage of the opportunity to network with other refugee resettlement service providers, a multitude of Catholic Charities programs, and with other social service agencies within the greater Bay Area. 6.) Gain leadership and/or project management experience through volunteer supervision and program development. 7.) assist with fundraising activities, including special events and grant writing. About our Internships ● All internships are unpaid. Interns are responsible for all costs of living. ● Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County can support interns who wish to get academic credit for their work with our program. ● Program provides direct service experience to help interns build their resumes ● All interns must

● Strong consideration is given to applicants who can make long time commitments Experiences interns can expect Direct Program Participant Interaction.Refugee program participants are in our office every day, and all interns will have the opportunity to practice and build cross- cultural communication skills through program participant interaction. Please note that internships with Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement program are not an opportunity to get to know refugees on a personal level. Rather, interns assist with the delivery of services to refugees as program participants of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara county, maintaining professional boundaries at all times. Administrative Work.All interns and all staff collaborate in the necessary tasks of documenting the services we provide to program participants. No internship is solely administrative, but all interns contribute to tasks including filing, copying, faxing, and data entry. CCSCC Refugee Resettlement program seeks interns who understand the importance of accurate records and are willing to give their full attention to necessary administrative tasks. Representing Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County Refugee Resettlement Program.All interns will interact with the broader community, be it volunteers, landlords, employers, or partner agencies. Interns are expected to be able to communicate clearly the mission and services of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County Refugee Resettlement Program and to address community members’ questions with patience and respect. Managing time and meeting deadlines.All interns are expected to come prepared to keep track of and meet multiple deadlines, from urgent tasks to multi-week projects. Required Qualifications: ● IMust be able to speak, read, and write English fluently and at a university level. ● Must demonstrate professional communication skills on the telephone, in person, and in email correspondence. ● Must be proficient in basic Windows applin process of acquiring or having already acquired a Bachelor’s Degree in the social science, international

2012 INTERNSHIP LISTINGS Employment Development Internship Duties ● Work with Employment Staff to help refugees find jobs given their skills. ● Assist in reaching out to potential employers ● Help match employers with dependable refugee program participants. ● Facilitate communication between the program participant and employer. ● Assist in developing weekly Job Club class topics. Employment Readiness Internship Duties
● Work with Employment staff to help refugees build job search skills. ● Help teach refugees how to develop a resume and cover letter. ● Assess and pre-screen applicants to determine the employment level. ● Assist in developing weekly Job Club class topics.
CCSCC Refugee Resettlement - 2012 Internship Listings4 Program Participant Support Services Internship Duties ● Assist Case Managers in providing necessary services to newly arrived refugees within their first 3 months. ● Assist with updating case files, schedule appointments, assist with initial home set-up, and follow-up with program participants. ● Work with Case Managers to help refugees remove barriers to self-sufficiency (employment, housing, health, social services). ● Facilitate in-kind donations from the community and help ensure a smooth set up of apartments for newly arrived refugees. ● Conduct housing searches, view apartments, arrange for rental collaborate with staff and volunteers to coordinate set-up of furniture and household goods. Community Development and Advocacy Internship Duties
● Work closely with the Community Outreach Staff to build community support for the refugees served by Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. ● Represent Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County Refugee Resettlement Program at community events. ● Assist with social media activities to the community. ● Assist with fund raising events throughout the community at events or individual donation events.
