Education:
In 1956 Leon Panetta entered Santa Clara University, and in 1960 he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He also received a Juris Doctor in 1963 from the Santa Clara University Law School, and soon after began practicing law.
Professional Experience:
Leon Panetta was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976. He served the Central Coast district in Congress for sixteen years, and chaired the House Budget Committee from 1989 to 1993. He served as the White House Chief of Staff during the Clinton Administration. Panetta and his wife founded the Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy in December 1998, where they serve as the Institute's directors. He was a member of the Iraq Study Group in 2006, and in January 2009 accepted President Obama's request to return to Washington as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. In April 2011 it was announced that he will be assuming the position of Secretary of Defense.
