<h4>Initial Contacts</h4> With the etiquette suggestions made above in mind, students are encouraged to consult the sample e-mail, letter and telephone communications for making initial contact that are included in the Appendix to Documenting Local Sites for LRP Manual. In some instances students are able to make contact through a family member or friend; in others, this contact is a “cold call” and its success requires some thought and planning ahead of time. Individuals involved in organizations and congregations can be very welcoming and helpful; but their primary mission, and hence their organization's mission, is not to be available to students doing research projects.
