Anke specializes in criminal justice issues, with an emphasis on gender, youth, violence, and the law.  She teaches courses in Criminal Justice Systems, the Sociology of Crime, Deviant Behavior, and Law and Society.  Her research and teaching interests focus on domestic violence, child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and the application of feminist theory and methods to social problems associated with deviance and crime.

Prior to joining the Sociology Department, Anke worked as a public policy researcher for national and international women’s and children’s advocacy organizations (such as the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and the Population Council), and served on the board of directors at the Family Violence Law Center (Oakland, CA).  She is the co-author of numerous policy reports published by the United Hospital Fund (New York); Louis Harris and Associates (New York); and the Institute for Global Health (UC-San Francisco/Berkeley). Anke is now preparing manuscripts from her dissertation, entitled Judgment Days: On Domestic Violence, Battered Women and Children, and a Liberal Court, for journal publication.
