Computing Facilities

The Learning Commons, Technology Center, and Library is a 194,000 sq. ft. building on four levels with more than 1100 reader seats of a variety of types, including carrels, small tables, lounge furniture, cafe, and outdoor terraces. The facility has more than 200 desktop computers; 2 video editing suites; a multi-media lab; wide availability of wired network connections and power; access to a secure wireless network; and more than 25 six or eight-person collaborative workrooms or other group study spaces that can be reserved via the web. The first floor has a large “Start Here” Desk, which is staffed by both the Library and IT. Computing Facilities Summer students are eligible to use the student computing facilities at SCU. The Learning Commons has a total of 60 workstations, both PC and Mac, on the first floor and lower level. All workstations have Microsoft Office and include utilities for browsing the Internet, connecting to other university computing resources, and checking e-mail. Individual professors may also elect to have discipline or class specific software programs installed on some or all of the Commons computers. The second floor of the Learning Commons includes 3 classrooms. Two of the classrooms have a total of 80 dual-boot Macs that can boot to Mac OS X or Windows XP. The 3rd room is a PC lab with 14 dual monitor Dell computers. These 3 rooms are available for students when not previously reserved for classes or other instruction.
