Getting Started: Students MUST check their SCU GroupWise email account regularly. If you are enrolled in an online course and have not heard from your instructor one week before class begins, then you are responsible to contact the instructor using the e-mail information below. If, for any reason, you cannot contact the instructor using this information, you should contact the Summer Program Office at (408) 554-4833 or scusummer@scu.edu. Students must log into ANGEL and register for the class, and complete the “About Me” learner profile by the first day of class. For financial (billing and refund) purposes, all online courses will be assigned a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday schedule. However, you will be required to do the assignments as assigned in the syllabus posted on ANGEL.
Technical Information: AT MINIMUM, students need reliable access to a computer with Internet connection (high-speed is preferable), equipped with antivirus software (available free of charge to SCU students); the latest version of your browser (Explorer for PC, Safari or Camino for Macs) with appropriate plug-ins; Adobe Acrobat Reader; QuickTime, and Windows Media Player.
Personal Characteristics of Successful Online Students: The academic skills and personal attitudes that can contribute to successful online learning are not significantly different than the skills and attitudes that contribute to successful classroom learning. However, understanding the online environment and familiarity with basic computer operations and applications are absolutely crucial. Students who are most successful in online classes have taken the time to fully understand Angel: its interface, how it works, what different icons mean. Also, students who have successfully completed online courses are:
- self-disciplined and able to plan ahead and work independently to meet deadlines;
- have excellent time management skills and are willing to put in the necessary 15-20 hours, spread out over the week, rather than in marathon sessions;
- take primary responsibility for their own learning and will ask questions before they complete an assignment to ensure they understand what’s required;
- careful readers who do more than skim a page, highlighting important points and/or making hard copies of pages with a great deal of crucial information;
- good communicators and comfortable expressing themselves in writing to their classmates and with the instructor;
- willing to share their ideas and work with their classmates so they can all succeed in an online environment;
- willing to initiate contact with classmates and instructor when confusions first arise and not wait until confusions become problems;
- comfortable with the online environment: [at minimum] with working in ANGEL, navigating the internet, using various search engines, downloading and uploading files and data, sending emails with attachments, and [ideally] with instant-messaging, blogging, podcasting, and video-conferencing;
- comfortable with computer technology, able to use various peripherals (CDs, memory sticks, etc.) and basic software applications like Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat.
