David Sword joined the faculty of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Santa Clara University in 1994. Previously he was the Technical Director for the Yale Repertory Theater and was on the faculty of the Yale School of Drama in New Haven, Connecticut.

David received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Drama from Yale University in 1990 with a focus in Technical Design and Production. In addition to providing technical and production oversight for departmental productions David teaches courses in Production, Technical Design, and Sound Design and supervises the scene shop where the scenery for departmental productions is built.

When not engaged in classroom or production duties, David spends much of his time investigating how technology can be used in the area of live theater and dance production. One example is the implementation of a computerized digital sound recording and playback system that allows sound designers to create complex sound designs without being constrained by operator skill level. This system is also capable of triggering light cues, scenery shift cues, and other effects.

The next step that David is interested in pursuing is to combine this show control system with digital video and image projection to create expanded multimedia possibilities within a live theatre and dance environment.
