Scholarships & Financial Aid
Scholarships
Several scholarships which encompass all aspects of theatrical arts are granted to incoming majors who have auditioned or interviewed the previous winter quarter. Theatre includes acting, directing, playwriting, design, as well as history and literature. Dance includes modern, jazz, ballet, and tap.
Financial Aid
Financial aid for a major in Theatre and Dance is normally a combined package of help from many sources: federal, state, the university, and the department. To receive aid, you must file an application with the Financial Aid Office before February 1 of the year you plan to attend Santa Clara University. All financial aid is dependent upon your acceptance as a student to the University. Visit the Financial Aid office site.
Auditions for the 2010-2011 school year will be held Saturday, January 16 from 9:00am to 5:30pm.
Scholarship Application:
Students interested in applying for scholarships must complete an application. The completed application includes two (2) letters of recommendation, a resume of theatrical or dance experience, and a short essay. Download the application:

On Saturday, January 16, 2010, a special workshop will be offered for students auditioning and interviewing for any Theatre/Dance Scholarship. Beginning at 9:00am, workshops will be held in Acting, Design/Technology and Dance. The Acting and Design workshops will be held simultaneously— the large group split evenly into two groups with each group attending one of the workshops. After an hour the groups will change, giving everyone the opportunity to attend both workshops. The dance workshop will be held in both the morning and afternoon, allowing students interested in both theatre and dance to participate in both. Students will have the opportunity to get to know the faculty in a relaxed atmosphere and the workshops will serve as an excellent warm up for the interview process.
INTERVIEW/AUDITION PROCESS
The interview/auditions will be held in the afternoon. If you have more than one interest in theatre and dance (and we encourage this), you may share your work in the secondary fields of interests in the interview. All scholarship applicants will be notified of their interview and audition appointments by e-mail or telephone. Normally, each appointment will last about 15 minutes. Appointments will be scheduled between 12:30 and 5:30 on Saturday, January 16, 2010.
DANCE
Be prepared to demonstrate your dance ability. You may perform your own or someone else’s choreography, in any style (modern, ballet, jazz). Be sure to bring your own CD if you plan to dance to music. You should arrive early enough to stretch and warm-up before your audition.
ACTING
Acting students should prepare one contemporary monologue, no more than two minutes in length. You may also sing if you wish. The song should be between 16 and 32 bars and from a musical. Please provide a CD for accompaniment.
DESIGN/TECHNOLOGY/STAGE MANAGEMENT
Students interested in these fields should bring a portfolio of any design or technical work you have done in costumes, lighting, sets, props, etc. For example, we would like to see sketches, renderings, and photographs, of things you helped create or designed. Those with an interest in Stage Management should bring any prompt books you have produced, and be prepared to discuss your role in the production process.
PLAYWRITING, DIRECTING, HISTORY AND LITERATURE
Students interested in any of these fields should come with samples of their work—promptbook, papers and/or plays. Be prepared to discuss your interests and your role in the theatre process.
