Major and Minor in Women's & Gender Studies

Requirements for the Major:

Ten (10) courses, at least five (5) of which must be upper division

  • One (1) of the following Principles of WGST Course or Sequence:
    • WGST 1&2: CTW
    • WGST 11A&12A: C&I
    • WGST 50: Introduction to Women's & Gender Studies
    • WGST 51: Introduction to LGBTQ Studies
    • WGST 112/ETHN 154: Women of Color
    • WGST 114/ETHN 157: Race, Class, Gender and the College Experience
    • WGST 115/SOCI 153: Race, Class & gender in the US
    • WGST 169/HIST 115: Gender, Race and Citizenship in the Modern World
    • WGST 172/HIST 135: Gender, Race, and Class in 20th Century Europe
  • One of the following:
    • Feminist Theory (WGST 101) 
    • Feminist Literary Theory and Criticism (WGST 163/ENGL 125) (advised in the junior year)
  • Both of the following are required:
    • Feminist Methods (WGST 102/COMM111G) (advised in the junior year)
    • Senior Seminar (WGST 190) (senior year)
  • Six (6) courses from among the offerings in WGST and cross-listed courses (students cannot count their Principles course for this requirement).
  • Emphasis
    In consultation with the director, students will develop an area of concentration within the requirements linking at least three of the six courses into an area of interest
  • Co-Curricular Requirement
    Majors must attend two events per year that are sponsored or co-sponsored by the WGST Program. For each event, a 1-2 page reflective analysis (not a summary) of the event is required, due in the WGST Program office within a week of the event.

Six (6) courses, at least three (3) of which must be upper division

    • WGST 115/SOCI 153: Race, Class & gender in the US
    • WGST 169/HIST 115: Gender, Race and Citizenship in the Modern World
    • WGST 172/HIST 135: Gender, Race, and Class in 20th Century Europe
  • One of the following:
    • Feminist Theory (WGST 101) 
    • Feminist Literary Theory and Criticism (WGST 163/ENGL 125)
