2008 SUMMER ETHICS CAMP SCHEDULE and DESCRIPTIONS Camps held at Santa Clara University meet in the E.L. Wiegand Teleconference Center in the Arts and Sciences Building. Tues-Fri, 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Camp 1 June 17–20, 2008 Santa Clara University Character-Based Curriculum for K-12 This camp is for teachers, counselors, and administrators in elementary through high school programs actively teaching students while promoting good character. We will discuss school-wide character education programs for all subject areas, including Character-Based Literacy (CBL) in English, Social Studies, and Science. Specialized presentations for grade levels and areas will be offered. Camp 2 June 24-27, 2008 St. Joseph Center Orange, CA Character Education for Catholic Schools in the CSJ Educational Network A camp for leaders and educators in Catholic schools in the CSJ Educational Network, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, these sessions focus on moral development and character education, as well as the implications for the entire curriculum. This includes instruction in religion, campus ministry activities, and school prayer experiences. Camp 3 July 15-18, 2008 Santa Clara University Character Education Curriculum for: A. Alternative School Settings B. Special Education Settings This camp is for teachers, counselors, and administrators in alternative, special, correctional, and general education programs for at-risk students and juvenile offenders. This session focuses on practices that build character with students who may be difficult to teach. Participants learn modified interventions in literacy, life-skills, emotional management, and cognitive skills to improve coping and cooperation. CBL is widely used in court-community and alternative schools. Camp 4 Character Based Literacy/ Physical Science This camp is being merged with Camp 6, which will be held in Orange County, California. Camp 6 is hosted by the OCDE/ACCESS program. Camp 5 August 12-15, 2008 St. Joseph Center Character Based Literacy for Alternative School Settings This camp is for teachers, counselors, and administrators in alternative, special, correctional, and general education programs for at-risk students and juvenile offenders. Focusing on the implications of character education for science instruction, this high school program includes earth and physical science concepts organized around themes of environmental responsibility. Applications of ethics to teaching methods, content selection, and science problems are included. This camp is hosted by the OCDE/ACCESS program.
