Day 21: Track Your Trash Habits

"We must realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more." -The Earth Charter

Carry your trash in a clear plastic bag with you throughout the day. Later that evening, sort it as landfill waste, recyclable, or compostable.

Is there one particular type of trash you accumulated more of, i.e. landfill, recyclable, or compost? What can you do to reduce both your landfill and overall waste? Learn more about the process of trash disposal. Watch The Story of Stuff to learn more about consumption. What happens after you throw away that wrapper or recycle those papers?

Consumption is a hard thing to break. I have tried to be so much better at visiting consignment or thrift stores to shop. At home we have only one bag of trash each week and it is only 12 gallons - I would love it to be smaller but the hard part is the convenience of some trash. Like meat wrappers at the grocery store, or my sons nightly pull up. Using cloth we could do but then his bed would be all wet by the morning, and we would have more laundry to do and may not have the time to do it. This video was a great reminder as we move into the holiday season to limit consumption. Break the cycle.
