Day 27: The St. Francis Pledge
“The vocation of being a “protector”... means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. … In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God’s gifts!... Let us be “protectors” of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment.” - Pope Francis, 19 March 2013
Earlier this month we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi by meditating on what it means to be a steward of creation. Today, we invite you to take the St. Francis Pledge to protect God’s creation and advocate on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change. Check out the Catholic Climate Covenant website to connect the call to care for the earth and the poor with Catholic teachings. Learn about simple ways to reduce carbon footprint, like unplugging cell phones, laptops or tablets as soon as they are charged.
How does my use (or overuse) of resources such as water, gas and electricity impact others, especially the poor and vulnerable? How can I be a protector of the gift of God’s creation so that others can share in it fully?
