ABOUT THE AUTHORS

ROSANNA MARIE ALVAREZ is a senior political science major at Santa Clara University with minors in sociology and ethnic studies. She has been involved in the Emerging Leaders Program, MEChA, Pre-College Programs (a San Jose State admissions program for at-risk youth), the Political Science Student Association, the Youth Empowerment Program, East Side Project, the East San Jose Community Law Center, and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority. Following graduation, she plans on dedicating a year to serving the youth either through teaching or a community-based program. She also plans on looking into graduate programs to continue with her education.

NAOMI ARANA is currently in her third year at Santa Clara where she is studying biology. After she graduates from Santa Clara she looks forward to pursuing a career in medical research.

ADELA DORIA ARDELEAN graduated in 2001 from Santa Clara University with a major in biology and a minor in french. While at Santa Clara, Adela was an ESL Coordinator in SCCAP, a Senator for Current University Issues Committee, a Conversation Director for the Bannan Institute and was also involved in the church choir and French Club. Adela hopes to become a physician and start a women's clinic.

ELIZABETH GUADALUPE BARRÓN graduated from Santa Clara University in June 2001 with a bachelor's degree in political science and a minor in women and gender studies. As an undergraduate she was involved in many activities including: PRISM, Diversity Chats, University Dialogues, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Resident Hall Assistant, Intra-Hall Council, and volunteering at Sheppard Middle School. She was the recipient of the Richard Riordan Award for Community Service-a university-wide recognition. She plans to continue her education. She is aspiring to be a Dean of Students at a university.

PATRICIA DÁVILA CASTORENA was born and raised in San Jose, Calif. and is currently a senior sociology major, with a double minor in ethnic studies and anthropology at Santa Clara University; her expected year of graduation is June 2002. Patty, as her family and friends call her, is currently the director of the Youth Empowerment Program of the Multicultural Center, and has been involved with the Access Council Committee, Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology Honor Society), the Sociology Student Association, and Vice President of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority and the East San Jose Community Law Center. She plans to attend law school and one day open her own law office specializing in immigration and crimes against women.

CLARA CHU will be graduating from Santa Clara University in June of 2003. She is a sociology major and communication minor. Clara is currently in her second year as a resident assistant in one of the university residence halls.

WILLIAM HUERTA is a senior at Santa Clara University with a major in sociology with an emphasis in business and human services and a minor in ethnic studies. He is currently co-chair of Chicanos and Latinos in Health Education (CHE), vice-president of the Sociology Student Association, a member of Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology Honor Society), and an associate member of Sigma XI (Scientific Research Society). He will start the Health Careers Program at Harvard University in the Fall of 2002 and plans to matriculate into medical school.

PHIL JOHNSON is a 19-year-old junior majoring in finance and minoring in operational management information systems. He is currently a member ofthe Santa Clara men's soccer team and loves all sports.

NHU-Y LE is a Junior working toward her double degree in business and political science. She has been working for the Office of Housing and Resident Life as a Resident Assistant for the past two years. She is also an active member of the Vietnamese Student Association and the Multicultural Center Programming Board. In addition, she enjoys volunteering and working within the Vietnamese community at her church and in San Jose.

JEANNINE TORRES was born in Redwood City, CA. She has lived in the California Bay Area for the majority of her life. She received her AA Degree from Foothill College in June 2000 and is currently majoring in marketing. In June 2002 she will be the first member of her immediate family to receive a bachelor's degree. Upon graduation she hopes to pursue a career in marketing within the music industry.

VANESSA VALLEJO is currently a sophomore at SCU and plans on graduating in June of 2004. She is a psychology major and biology minor in the College of Arts and Sciences and intends on pursuing a master's and Ph.D. after graduating from Santa Clara.
