Resolution

One of the key values of Santa Clara University is to foster a learning community in which diversity and inclusive excellence are integral.   Earlier this year, Fr. Paul Locatelli wrote to the University community:

When we learn with and from each other, we learn to respect and cherish the dignity of each person and the gifts each person brings to our community. So it is always disappointing when the values and ideals we set for ourselves are not reflected in the way we live together. The stereotyping of Latinos at the recent theme party provides the important lesson that targeting and demeaning any group or individual, even if unintentional, is unacceptable.

This incident, together with other examples of prejudice and misunderstanding in our society, serves to underscore the importance of our on-going efforts to promote diversity and inclusive excellence, as well as social justice, on our campus. We the undersigned resolve to:

Reflect on both our strengths and our limitations in living up to the University ideals of inclusive excellence and cultural awareness

Seek ways

  • to increase sensitivity to ways behavior and words can be hurtful
  • to provide more opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to experience the value of a diverse learning community first-hand
  • to increase knowledge about the history and lives of underrepresented groups
  • to increase the likelihood that people from varied socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, gender, sexual orientation and religious backgrounds have opportunities to learn from one another in the context of our organization

Our collective enterprise to fashion a more just and humane world is enriched when we come to understand, appreciate, and embrace people of all races, countries, languages, religions, and creeds.  These affirmative efforts are critical steps toward building the inclusive community espoused in our mission.
