A NumberBy Caryl Churchill Presented by the SCU Center of Performing Arts in conjunction with Health & Science Horizons*Thursday, April 3, 2008 From the innovative mind of Caryl Churchill comes an emotionally compelling and intellectually provocative meditation on the implications of cloning. Exploring a series of confrontations between characters Salter and Bernard, Churchill powerfully juxtaposes a father’s attempt to redeem himself through modern science against a son’s painful realization that he is one of a series of clones. The play continues with a deeply human exploration of our inherent belief that we are individual, unique, not just one in a number. This multidisciplinary collaboration includes a talkback, moderated by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethic’s Margaret R. McLean, immediately following the performance. The talkback panel includes actor Robert Campbell (07); Professor of Law and author of Illegal Beings: Human Clones and the Law (Cambridge University Press 2005), Kerry Macintosh; Associate Professor of Biology, Leilani Miller; and Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, Larry Nelson. *Health and Science Horizons at Santa Clara University is a series designed to enrich student, faculty, and community understanding of modern healthcare topics. More information. Made possible by funding from a grant from the Ignatian Center's Bannan Institute, the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, Gerry and Sally DeNardo, the Center of Performing Arts, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
