Our Voice, Our VisionMay 15 - June 6, 1999The de Saisset Museum hosts this exhibit from ArtsConnect, a program of the Arts Council of Santa Clara County which brings the arts to a special population of youth, who are being educated outside the traditional classroom. The children served by ArtsConnect, ages 5-18, are struggling to overcome a variety of difficult personal circumstances, including familial abuse and neglect, substance abuse, and gang violence. This exhibition celebrates small victories over adversity by highlighting the success of arts intervention in building self-esteem, fostering critical thinking, and providing healthy alternatives to drugs and violence. Frances Paragon-Arais, Carlos Perez, Philip Rosenthal, and Flo Oy Wong are the artists-in-residence who worked with the youth. This project is presented through ArtsConnect, a collaboration between the Arts Council of Santa Clara County and the Santa Clara County Office of Education, Alternative Schools Department. Primary sponsors are the California Arts Council, a state agency; the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and the Valley Foundation. Additional funding for ArtsConnect has been provided by Adobe Systems, Aspect Telecommunications, Deluxe Checks, Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp., IBM Corp., The Junior League of San Jose, Komag Corp., The San Jose Mercury News, Siemens Rolm Communications, Inc., and The Stella B. Gross Charitable Trust. |
