Globalization’s Children: Photographs by Sebastião SalgadoJan. 18–March 15
Internationally recognized photojournalist Sebastião Salgado has devoted his entire career to exploring the theme of globalization and its ramifications. This compelling exhibition exemplifies Salgado’s ongoing interest in the theme, his skill as a photographer, and ultimately, his profoundly humanistic philosophy. Salgado is lauded for his work’s ability to convey the human implications of globalization. This is most visible in Salgado’s images of children around the world—images upon which this exhibition is based. Featuring approximately 30 photographs of children, the works in this exhibition are culled from several of Salgado’s series: Migrations, An Uncertain Grace, Workers, and Other Americas. Salgado’s dramatic images of children perhaps most poignantly express the human impact of globalization in its many forms. Accessible, compelling, and beautiful, these images will provide a powerful visual complement to Santa Clara University’s ongoing Institute on Globalization. A world-renowned exemplar of the tradition of “concerned photography,” Salgado has been awarded virtually every major photographic prize in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. A former member of Magnum Photos and a recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography, he has twice been named Photographer of the Year by the International Center for Photography. Originally trained as an economist, Salgado worked for Brazil’s Ministry of Finance and later for the International Coffee Organization. These experiences led him to his current avocation as advocate for the oppressed, and he turned to photography to convey the plight of the world’s poor. Salgado began working as a photojournalist in 1973 and soon pioneered a more self-expressive, aestheticized style of photojournalism. Based in Paris, Salgado has exhibited his work around the world. Most recently, his large-scale Migrations exhibition was featured at the Berkeley Art Museum. This exhibition is organized by the de Saisset Museum in cooperation with Ursula Gropper Associates. Globalization’s Children: Photographs by Sebastião Salgado is offered in conjunction with and is partially funded by the University’s Institute on Globalization. |
