The Education branch provides workshops for K12 and community college teachers and educational leaders. Through collaborations with other organizations we provide a diverse array of programming. Workshops are also offered that meet preliminary credential requirements for graduate students seeking a preliminary teaching credential. Within the Center for Professional Development is the Academy of Blended Learning, a program we have been providing for Catholic K12 institutions.

Through our collaboration with Institute of Reading Development we are able to provide summer reading programs throughout Silicon Valley and into Monterey County. Click here to learn more about the reading programs we are offering for ages 4 through adult.

*PASS materials consist of two DVDs of instructional vignettes, a general manual outlining PASS principles, and materials for different grade levels: elementary, middle, and high school. Participants will receive a free PASS set at the level of their choice (value: $279.00), and discounts will be offered on other sets.
Powerful and Authentic Social Studies (PASS) is a professional development program that trains social studies teachers in curriculum design, assessment, and instruction in a standards-based environment. It is an ideal vehicle for classroom-level implementation of C3 and Common Core standards. This institute will provide participants with the materials and expertise necessary to lead their own PASS training workshops in their schools and school districts. Participants will learn about PASS criteria and standards for curriculum design, assessment construction, and effective instruction. In small learning communities, participants will examine videotaped K-12 vignettes of teaching and create examples of curriculum units and assessment tasks to share with their learning community.
PASS is an effective means of training pre-service, as well as in-service, teachers. This institute will interest NCSS members at all educational levels.
Joseph A. Braun, Jr. was an elementary educator for seven years before earning a doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction from Northern Illinois University in 1981. A teacher educator of social studies education for 35 years, he has held faculty positions at the University of Wyoming, California State University – Chico, and for fourteen years at Illinois State University. Leaving as Professor Emeritus in 2003 he and his wife relocated to Carmel, CA where he worked as an adjunct faculty member at his alma mater, Santa Clara University and also at Chapman University. His research focus is on integrating technology in social studies education and socio-emotional development The author, or contributing author, of a dozen books and over 45 journal articles, he is a frequent presenter at conferences and currently teaches on-line for the University of Missouri. He serves as the coordinator of Professional Development for the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS). He was a member of the Board of Directors of NCSS from 2002-2005.
