Participation in classroom discussions and activities is key to getting the most out of the course and in providing a richer experience for all. Contact me immediately if you find you will be unable to attend a class meeting. Career Lifeline Analysis Log (25%) Construct your career lifeline and annotate key events. Then, on a weekly basis, you will be assigned a theory to apply to a point in your lifeline. Be concise and show your understanding of the theory and constructs. You will not be graded on the lifeline contents, but on how well you understand the theories and apply them. The objective is for you to gain insight into your own career development, and to learn how theories can be applied to bring greater understanding to career events. 1-2 pages are usually sufficient. The completed Analysis Log will be due at two points during the course (see assignment due dates). Class Presentation (30%) With a team of 3-4, select one topic from the following list, or propose a topic of interest to you. Research at least 3 scholarly articles on the subject in addition to the regular class readings. Prepare a 30-45 minute presentation for the class (depending on class size). The first part of your presentation should discuss the relevant theory. Keep this part brief if it’s material we have already covered in class. The second part should propose a specific program or intervention that addresses a population and their issues, and is appropriate for the theories you discuss. Provide a brief handout or copies of overheads to each class member. You may have a mix of lecture, exercises, etc. Each person must do some of the presenting. Be creative and involve the class! Some ideas for topics (you do not have to choose from this list): Career decisions for displaced workers Career maturity and career development with children Workplace issues for a multi generational workforce Identity development and adolescent career choice Career challenges for (specific population) Spiritual influences in career choice Work ethic(s) and how they relate to careers Applying values in the work place Reintegration of veterans into the workforce Integrating career counseling and psychotherapy Your presentation grade will be heavily influenced by mastery of topic area, currency and relevance of research, ability to tie theory with intervention, ability to engage the class and answer questions, quality/relevance of presentation material and handout. Take home Final (30%) You will receive a list of five questions, from which you’ll choose two to answer. You’ll have one week to complete, length should be no more than six pages, double spaced.
