Admissions Requirements

  • Application Fee: $50.
  • Application form (please make a copy of your original and submit both copies).
  • Official transcripts (two copies of official transcripts from all college-level institutions, including junior colleges) attended with the degrees granted and posted.
  • Three letters of recommendation (appropriate forms are in your application packet; your references may also be submitted on official letterhead by your recommenders).
    • If you are a teacher education applicant, your letters should be as follows: one letter from an academic advisor or faculty member; two letters from people who can comment on your ability to work with youth.
  • Essay/statement of purpose
    • Please discuss fully your reasons for entering the profession of teaching or your reasons for pursuing a Masters degree.

Only required for Special Education Applicants. You may choose one from either of these two tests:

  • Graduate Record Examination, general (GRE)
  • Miller's Analogies Test (mat)

If you have an advanced degree, the entrance exam requirement is waived.

*TOEFL scores (required of all international students and non-native speakers of English - minimum score is 570 on the old scale, 215 on the new scale.)

Santa Clara University Graduate Programs in Education

Formal interview: required for all teaching credential and non-degree applicants.

  • For teacher education candidates: the interview will be scheduled after you have applied for admission to the program.

Admissions requirements specific to Teaching credential students:

  • CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test) scores need to be on file for every applicant for all credential programs. Scores may be reported electronically to Santa Clara University; applicants should note test date on application for reference.
  • CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) scores are required for all Multiple Subject credential students. Single Subject credential students may waive the CSET requirement if a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved subject matter preparation program was completed. A letter verifying program completion must be on file in order to waive the CSET requirement.

Drop-in academic advisement group sessions for teaching credential students only are available.
