Jeffrey Baerwald, S.J., Ph.D. Published Research

Jeffrey Baerwald, S.J., Counseling Psychology, has published his research "Cognitive mediational deficits and the role of coping styles in pedophile and ephebophile Roman Catholic clergy" in Journal of Clinical Psychology, 64, 1-16.

This study was designed to examine hypothesized differences between sex offending and nonoffending Roman Catholic clergy on cognitive mediation abilities as measured by the Rorschach Inkblot Test (H. Rorschach, 1921/1942). This study compared 78 priest pedophiles and 77 priest ephebophiles with 80 nonoffending priest controls on the Inkblot test using J. E. Exner's (2003) Comprehensive System.

Dale Larson

Dale Larson Ph.D. Presents

George Bonanno's new book, The Other Side of Sadness: What the New Science of Bereavement Tells Us About Life After Loss, is being heralded as the definitive scientific statement on bereavement-related research. Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to this advance praise, especially in its treatment of grief counseling. Bonanno's view is that grief counseling "has...proved to be not only notoriously ineffective but sometimes even harmful" (p. 105). Later in the same paragraph he again raises the specter of harmful effects, this time citing a 2007 article by Lilienfeld in Perspectives on Psychological Science. But what evidence from the new science does Bonanno marshall to support this negative, almost damning view of grief counseling?

Lucila Ramos-Sánchez

Lucila Ramos-Sánchez, Ph.D. Publishes in Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development

Counseling Psychology, co-authored an article in the January 2009 issue of the Journal of Counseling & Development titled “The Relationships Between Mexican American Acculturation, Cultural Values, Gender, and Help-Seeking Intentions.” She published “The Relationship between Masculinity, Asian Values, Acculturation and Depression of Filipino-American Men,” in Family Therapy Vol. 33 No.3, 139-155. The study was completed and published with former graduate students in the Counseling Psychology program, Gerald Gonzales, Kimberly Tran, and Brad Roeder. She also published “Language Switching and Mexican Americans’ Emotional Expression” in the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development.

Elected to Fellow status, American Psychological Association, Division 43, Family Psychology, August 16, 2008.  The American Psychological Association describes Fellow status as “an honor bestowed upon APA Members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology” and whose work “has had a national impact on the field of psychology.”

Shauna Shapiro received Tenure and has been promoted to Associate Professor. She has three peer-reviewed papers in press: Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction for the Treatment of Adolescent Psychiatric Outpatients: A Randomized Clinical Trial for the Journal of  Consulting and Clinical Psychology; Mindfulness Meditation and CBT for  Insomnia: A Naturalistic 12-Month Follow-up for The Journal of Science and  Healing; and Cultivating Mindfulness: Effects on Well-Being for the  Journal of Clinical Psychology.
