  •  Zombie TIDE Claim of Harmful Effects Strikes Again

    George Bonanno's new book, The Other Side of Sadness: What the New Science of Bereavement Tells Us About Life After Loss, is being heralded as the definitive scientific statement on bereavement-related research. Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to this advance praise, especially in its treatment of grief counseling. Bonanno's view is that grief counseling "has…proved to be not only notoriously ineffective but sometimes even harmful" (p. 105). Later in the same paragraph he again raises the specter of harmful effects, this time citing a 2007 article by Lilienfeld in Perspectives on Psychological Science. But what evidence from the new science does Bonanno marshall to support this negative, almost damning view of grief counseling?

    Dale Larson gave a keynote presentation titled, “A Person-Centered Approach to End-of-Life Care: Learning from our Mistakes,” for the European Association of Client-Centered Psychotherapy and the Person-Centered Approach in Naples, Italy, on Oct. 10.

    Elected to Fellow status, American Psychological Association, Division 17, Counseling Psychology, August 16, 2008.  The American Psychological Association describes Fellow status as “an honor bestowed upon APA Members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology” and whose work “has had a national impact on the field of psychology.”

    An on line publication called the Daily News from Los Angeles, has an article titled Mourning Changed by Technology  written by  By Jerry Berrios, Staff Writer.  "Technology, especially the Internet, is helping people maintain their memories of the person who died", said Dale Larson, professor of counseling psychology at Santa Clara University.
