Description
This 15 hour seminar will provide a lively, interactive forum for clinicians of varying levels of experience to explore central principles and strategies for identifying and addressing substance abuse/dependency issues that surface in clients we see. While supplementary informational material and readings will be provided, the prime focus of this seminar will be to provide creative a space for thinking together and building skills related to difficult assessment and treatment challenges/limitations which emerge in our actual treatment situations (whether private practice or agencies).
Issues discussed will include: initial assessment /potential referral and treatment choices based on bio-psycho-social criteria, stages of addiction/ recovery, harm reduction, co-occurring disorders, relapse issues, and specific transference counter-transference challenges that confront clinicians in working with this population.
Clinical interventions utilizing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and object relations psychodynamic developmental formulations will be explored. Appropriateness of 12 Step & other self-help recovery models and medical interventions will also be considered.Instructor

Alan Javurek, PhD, MFT. Is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Los Gatos and Palo Alto since 1990. Alan worked for over 8 years as clinical coordinator for the Outpatient Adolescent and Family Chemical Dependency Program at Kaiser Medical Center, San Jose where he also provided clinical services for adults. Alan is currently an advanced Candidate in Psychoanalysis at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California in San Francisco.
