Description

John Gottman, Ph.D., has developed a way to assess and treat couples based on his 35 years of research. Along with long-time collaborator Bob Levenson, Gottman set out to discover what predicted divorce. Creating a marital laboratory, known as “The Love Lab”, Gottman implemented multi-method approaches to study what works and what doesn’t work in relationships. Following couples for up to 18 years, this longitudinal data has provided a gold mine of information not only about what predicts divorce – with 91% accuracy over 3 studies - but also what couples are doing that works and is predictive of long-term satisfied relationships. Gottman calls his theory “The Sound Relationship House”

This workshop will review Gottman’s research and implications for this research in assessing and treating couples. Myths and assumptions long held by clinicians about what is “dysfunctional” when a marriage is struggling, and what is “functional” when a marriage is going well, are challenged based on Gottman’s research. This model provides clinicians a blue print for developing effective strategies to address the three central components of the Sound Relationship House model: 1) The Friendship System, 2) The Conflict System and 3) The Meaning System.
