Master of Arts Program
Interdisciplinary Education: Environmental Literacy and Ethics
Advisor: Sara Garcia
The SCU MA in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Environmental Literacy and Ethics Emphasis is intended for teacher credential candidates that have a bachelors in environmental studies, environmental science or liberal studies with a science emphasis.
| Goal The goal of this credential/masters combination program is to prepare classroom teachers who are actively engaged in the integration of ecological concepts in all school curriculum. It is primarily designed for K-12 practicing teachers. Objective The main objective of the credential/masters ELE combination is to focus on complex issues in environmental education that transcend multiple disciplines. The cohort of MA candidates admitted to this program build supportive networks that sustain dialogues linked to the ethical dimensions of sustainability, and biodiversity. Ecology is viewed as a restorative process integrated in an education that is linked to learning as a response to real needs and life situations of the learners. Real learning is seen as participatory and experiential and not just didactic. Teachers working on this MA emphasis must see themselves as facilitators of students who are acitve agents in ecological change, individually and collectively. Practicing teachers engaged in environmental education integrate experience in the natural world as an essential part of teaching for understanding the environment and strive for an ethical dimension in "good thinking" as a goal in learning through ecological literacy.
