Lisa S. Goldstein, Professor of Education and Director of Teacher Education Programs, was invited to join the Palo Alto Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) Consortium as a representative of Santa Clara University. The Palo Alto BTSA Consortium also includes representatives from Palo Alto Unified School District, Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, Los Gatos Saratoga Joint Union High School District, and Stanford University.
BTSA is the professional induction program for beginning teachers authorized by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Teachers who hold a preliminary teaching credential when they are hired by a California public school district must complete a two-year district-based program of mentoring, support, and ongoing professional development to earn a clear teaching credential.
BTSA programs are expected to establish partnerships with local institutions of higher education to ensure continuity and a smooth transition for novice teachers as they leave their credential program and enter the profession. Likewise, teacher educators must partner with BTSA programs to be sure their credential candidates’ preparation is meeting the needs of the districts that hire them. Lisa’s first initiative with the Palo Alto BTSA consortium was to develop a BTSA Transition Guide that allows faculty from the Santa Clara University teaching credential program to share specific information about each novice teacher’s professional strengths and areas for development with the BTSA coordinators in the school districts that hire them.
