Elizabeth Day 2

Elizabeth Day, Ph.D.

Faculty-School of Education

Dr. Day believes in educating the whole person, particularly through somatic awareness. She is a certified Somatic Leadership Coach through the Strozzi Institute. Somatics, from the Greek, refers to the living body in its wholeness. This entails the human possibility of harmonizing the body, mind, emotions and spirit, supporting a fully integrated human experience. Dr. Day has served as a professional development consultant and trainer to school districts, county offices of education, corporations, police officers and fire fighters, elected officials, and social service agencies. Dr. Day enjoys bringing somatic awareness into all aspects of her teaching and consulting.

Dr. Day’s enthusiasm comes forth in her classes as students discuss issues related to: ethical dilemmas teachers and human service professionals face in the classroom; how their goals, values, passions and beliefs inform their curriculum, instruction and how those commitments guide their legacy; how to engage students in living the "writerly life" through student-centered language arts methods and assessments; and how presence and leadership impact classroom management. She has received several awards for outstanding teaching at both the secondary and university levels.

Dr. Day is the sole author of the two-year, year-round Character Education Middle School Curriculum sponsored by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. The curriculum ulitlizes 35 young adult novels to facilitate teaching pro-social values, thoughts and skills. Over 30 county offices of education in the state of California access the program as well as teachers nationwide. Dr. Day’s efforts extended the work of the already successful high school Character Based Literacy program.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Day joined the faculty of the School of Education in the fall of 2002. She completed her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Prior, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Honors English and a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Day taught secondary English and social studies in Colorado as well as pre-service teachers within University of Wisconsin’s teacher credential program.

Dr. Day lives with her family in Santa Clara. She enjoys teaching and coaching, reading, camping in the backcountry, trail running, and swimming.
