Before coming to Santa Clara in 1982, she was Assistant Professor at Mount Saint Marys College in Los Angeles where she taught counseling and special education courses, created, and directed the Child Development Center. After two years, she joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville as an Associate Professor of learning disabilities and early childhood special education. Her professional interests focused while directing their on-campus, inclusive Early Childhood Center.
Dr. Cook is the lead author of Adapting Early Childhood Curricula for Children with Special Needs, now in its 7th edition. She is also co-author of Strategies for Including Children with Special Needs in Early Childhood Settings and is finalizing another co-authored text, Home Based Services: Early Intervention in Natural Environments expected to be published in 2008.
Professor Cook is most grateful to the U. S. Office of Special Education for funding a variety of proposals since 1990 that have provided financial assistance to numerous students while earning their Early Childhood or Mild/Moderate Specialist Credentials. Success with development of these personnel preparation proposals contributed to the presentation of the Faculty Senate Professor of the Year Award to Dr. Cook in 2003.
She lives in Los Gatos with her husband. They have two children, one of whom is a graduate of Santa Clara.
