Father Smith earned his bachelor degree from Santa Clara University in 1956. He is the author of The World is Charged: The Transcendent With Us (published in 2004) and The God Question: A Catholic Approach (published in 1988).
An instructor at Santa Clara since 1974, Father Smith's interests include Christology, ecclesiology, and liberation theology. He holds degrees from Gonzaga University, the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, and Rome's Pontifical Gregorian University.
