Campus Crimes In Progress & Violent Behaviors
As a member of the campus community, it is appropriate for you to contact Campus Safety when you observe suspicious persons or activity on campus; even though there may not be any obvious criminal activity or violence. If you notice something or someone suspicious on campus, please note the location and description of the person(s) involved. DO NOT confront them, instead, contact Campus Safety from the nearest telephone Emergency Call Box and report what you’ve observed. Campus Safety will respond to investigate the reported activity. Please remember that these procedures are for ON-CAMPUS incidents only, the Santa Clara Police Department should be contacted for emergencies, and crimes-in-progress that occur off campus.
TELL THE OPERATOR:
- Your name
- Your location
- The nature of the incident/ anyone injured
- If the incident is in-progress or not
- If weapons are involved
STAY ON THE LINE WITH THE OPERATOR – Be prepared to provide the following information upon request:
- Telephone number from which you are calling
- Description of suspect(s) and vehicle(s)
- Weapons present-types
- Injuries present-severity
- Nature of the injuries
- Property involved
If it is safe for you to do so, stay on the line with the operator until a Campus Safety Officer arrives on scene. Inform the Campus Safety Officer of any changes in the situation. Depending on the nature of the incident, Campus Safety will contact the Santa Clara Police.
Campus Crimes Not in Progress
It is important to report crimes that occur on campus, no matter how minor they may seem, as soon as they are discovered. Campus Safety will initially respond to reported incident on all crimes that have occurred on campus, and will refer the more serious incidents to the Santa Clara Police for additional investigation. Please dial x4441 (on campus) or (408) 554-4444 (for non-campus phones) to report emergencies.
Sexual assaults should be reported to the Rape Hotline (408) 287-3000.
If you are reporting a property crime, (e.g.: theft, vandalism) please be prepared to give the following information for the investigating officer:
- When and where the crime occurred.
- Accurate and complete descriptions of the property involved, including serial numbers and approximate values.
- Name(s) of any witness and/or suspect(s).
