Earthquake

Since the magnitude of an earthquake cannot be pre-determined, emergency precautions must be initiated within seconds after the initial tremor is felt; assuming the worst possible case.

Before an Earthquake:
  • Formulate a plan, so individuals are aware of the exit routes, assembly points and the location of the first aid kits within your building.
  • Secure heavy furniture, equipment and bookshelves within your office (contact Facilities 554-4742 to have items earthquake secured). Do not place glass or heavy equipment over your desk.
  • Keep a contact list of all department members for emergency notification purposes.
  • Obtain CPR and First Aid training; contact Campus Safety at 554-4441 or Human Resources at 554-4392 for further information.
During an Earthquake:
  • If indoors:
    • Remain where you are and take cover under a heavy desk or table. (Since 1994, taking cover in doorways has been discouraged.)
    • If in a hallway, sit against the wall with your back against it.
    • Be prepared to respond to the electricity going out when alarms and fire sprinklers are activated.
  • If outdoors:
    • Move to an open area and stand clear of buildings, electrical/telephone poles, overhead wires and flying glass.
    • Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until you are advised by the proper authorities.
  • If in an automobile:
    • Stop in the safest place available, away from power lines and trees. Remain in the vehicle for the shelter it provides.
After an Earthquake:
  • Be prepared for aftershocks. They are usually less intense than the initial earthquake, but can cause further structural damage.
  • Evaluate the situation and if an emergency exists, contact Campus Safety (dial x4444); they will contact additional resources if necessary.
  • Do not use lanterns, torches, lighted cigarettes or open flames; since gas leaks may be present.
  • Help those who are injured and administer first aid if required.
  • Check for fire hazards, water, gas and sprinkler valve leaks.
  • Determine if anyone has been caught in the elevators or was trapped by falling objects.
  • If the structural integrity appears to be deteriorating rapidly, evacuate the building and notify Campus Safety (dial x4444).
  • If the evacuation alarm sounds, follow established building evacuation procedures.
  • Should you become trapped in a building, DO NOT PANIC!
    • If a window is available, place an article of clothing outside the window as a marker for rescue crews.
    • If there is no window, tap on the wall at regular intervals to alert emergency crews of your location.
    • Campus Safety will inspect all buildings immediately after an earthquake. Priority is given to residence halls and buildings with elevators.
