New Degree Announced in Web Design and Engineering

Web designThe Department of Computer Engineering is pleased to announce its new Bachelor of Science degree program in Web Design and Engineering which will be available to students beginning in Fall 2009.  The program combines a technical education in computing with required courses in graphic art, communication and sociology to prepare graduates who can develop and maintain the infrastructure of the Web, while understanding how it affects society and how the ways in which it is used create new demands on technology. See related story.

In making the announcement, the computer engineering department noted, “The arrival of the Internet has changed our cultural landscape. In little more than a decade, the Internet has become pervasive within our lives, competing with television and changing the way we communicate, how we get our daily news, how we shop, and how we learn. The technology that enables the Web is complicated and extensive, yet most of us think of it in terms of how convenient, intuitive, and pleasing we find our online experience to be. As it evolves and matures, those who design and develop the technology will require a better understanding of the relationship between the infrastructure and the experience it creates and this degree program addresses that challenge.”

The Web Design and Engineering degree focuses study on the complex nature of the World Wide Web. Majors will not only learn to analyze, design and improve the computational infrastructure of the Internet; they will also gain the skills to develop appealing, engaging, effective and easy-to-use interactive media content while learning about the social, political, ethical and legal relationships between their work and those it affects.

“The BSWDE program combines a technical education in computing with courses in graphic art, communication and sociology,” said Dan Lewis, computer engineering professor.  “Santa Clara’s new breed of ‘Web engineers’ will not only possess an understanding of the technical capabilities and limitations of computing, but will also be prepared with a strong sensitivity and appreciation for the social implications and aesthetic aspects of their creations within the context of a new communications and collaborative media.”
