  • ELEN 160 -- “Chaos Theory, Metamathematics, and the Limits of Science: An Engineering Perspective on Religion”

    Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006 at 2:12 PM

A new technical elective that satisfies the third core requirement in Religious Studies. This is the first such class to be taught in the School of Engineering.

The course uses chaos theory, metamathematics and modern physics as a framework for discussing certain fundamental questions related to theology and the philosophy of religion. This past spring quarter, the course attracted some 20 engineering students. Prof. Zecevic was pleased with the way the students handled difficult mathematical concepts, and was particularly impressed with the quality of their term papers. Who said engineers can’t write!

The course will be offered again in the Fall of 2007, since Prof. Zecevic is spending this year participating in the new University Core development, and is also active in the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education. The development of the course was sponsored by grants from the Center for Science, Technology and Society, and the Markkula Center of Applied Ethics.
