Our Approach

The Frugal Innovation Lab functions at the intersection of education, research & innovation, and delivering benefit. We take advantage of interdisciplinary academic investment, diverse faculty research interests, Silicon Valley corporate partners, and lasting relationships with GSBI Alumni to provide both academic and practical experience to students interested in pursuing the mission of the Center.

Z: Deliver Benefit to Society
The Frugal Lab engages all dimensions of Santa Clara University's academic mission by embedding courses in engineering, business, public health, and environmental science. Each course trains students for best practices in the developing world context. CSTS grant programs fund faculty and student research in these areas. The Frugal Lab is a collaborative space for students and faculty to engage industry partners and NGOs to research and implement innovative technologies for consumers at the base of the pyramid. The environment, along with expert faculty guidance, facilitates critical transition from theoretical learning to practical skill application. Our extensive GSBI alumni network provides students the opportunity to participate in internships with social enterprises on the forefront of innovation. While conducting field work, students gain invaluable experience about the resource constraints and cultural consideration relevant to a project by testing their designs in the field.
